Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Santa will be visiting Billericay between the 10th and 23rd December and has told us where he hopes to be. Of course he will make every effort to complete these routes but we ask you to bear in mind that it is subject to weather and traffic conditions and the ability of his helpers to get home from work on time.

A number of us attended the District Training day at Clacton and I think we all learned something. It was good fun too and an opportunity to meet fellow Lions we see infrequently.

Billericay Town Beer Festival

This year for the first time, Billericay Lions and Billericay Town FC are arranging a beer festival. The fun will commence on Friday 2nd June in the evening and continue until Sunday lunchtime.
We are all meeting this week to put the final touches in place and panic about the things we have forgotten.

Charter Night

Billericay Lions celebrated the 31st anniversary of the granting of their charter on Saturday 15th May at Stockbrook Manor.
There was a good turnout of both Lions and friends / families and I believe a good time was had by all.
I must be getting old as I thought the music was a bit loud!

National Convention in Leeds tomorrow

Tomorrow sees us setting off early - I'll be leaving the house at 04.40 and picking up 4 other Lions from 3 different clubs to make the trek by car northwards to the Royal Armouries in Leeds. Taking a car may not be the most environmentally friendly way to travel, but at least we are taking a full car!
In Leeds we hope to meet friends from all over the UK (and, who knows, further afield, too - I believe attendance will be around 1200) as well as hear reports and vote on resolutions affecting all Lions throughout the UK.
I have never been to a national convention before, but if it is half as good as the local East Anglia one was in March, we are all in for a great time. I just hope that the "refreshments" are not too tempting as we all need to get home again before midnight.
At least the others can sleep an th eway up and on the way back. Just spare a thought for the designated driver. At least if they are sleeping, I can choose what is on the radio.

Are Lions right to help Haiti

One of the debates that often arises at Billericay Lions is whether it is right for us to give, whenever there is an appeal from Lions Club International to help support a major disaster, such as Haiti.

Please let us know what you think

The reasoning behind this is that when we are fund raising we generally say that funds raised are for local charities or causes. This is still the case for the majority of funds raised. However, are we then being unfair to the Billericay Public if we then give to some of the funds raised to support our fellow Lions in Haiti, to help them help the people of Haiti.

To me being part of an international organisation is that we help our fellow Lions in their time of need and I would like to think that should a major disaster ever strike Billericay, then International Lions Clubs will be their with aid to allow the Lions Club of Billericay to help the people of Billerciay.

Below is an excert from a comminication sent by the Lions Club International President to all Lions clubs worldwide

“To our Lions family in Haiti, I commit to you that the Lions of the world will be there for you today, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, the year after that - and again for as long as it takes.”

I also know lots of local individuals and companies are organising events to raise money Haiti, so I know that the the People of Billerciay do care.

We would be pleased to here your views which we can help guide our decision making in the future

FundRaising Events for 2010 - what would you like to see

At the Lions we are always looking for new Fund Raising events that we can put on to raise money for charity. To be sucessful, from a Fund raising and enjoyment perspective, these need to be well supported by the public.

So we thought we would ask if any of you have an idea of an event that you would like to see put on and would be prepared to support. If you are able to advise on what you would be prepeared to pay to go to such an event that would help us in assessing the viability.

Sleigh collection during bad weather

The Lions Club Of Billericay would like to sincerely apologise to the residents of Billericay for not being able to bring Santa out on his Sleigh since last Friday.

As you will appreciate whilst the main roads have been clear of snow and ice, the side roads along with the pavements and paths have not. The Lions felt that this would be an accident waiting to happen, and as well as concerns for Santa's 'elpers, we were also concerned for parents and children who would want to come out to see Santa in his Sleigh. We are sure you will agree that everyones safety must come first, and whilst we are disappointed that we were not able to commit to all our collections, we have been able to make it round some streets of Billericay and raised money to be given back to worthwhile causes within our Community.

Once again we are sorry if we haven't made it to your street as advertised, but would like to thank you for your support and hope we can count on it continuing in 2010.

It is always a great privilege when the time comes for Father Christmas to visit our town in the Lions Christmas Sleigh as we know that it brings joy to both young and old. From the children seeking a sweet and a word with Santa to the obvious pleasure of watching Parents and Grandparents.

World Sight Day

If you are reading this, you are unlikely to know what it is like to put one foot in front of the other without knowing what you are going to bump into. Unlikely to know what it is to endure a life where every pace is a step into the unknown.
At precisely noon on Thursday 8th October, World Sight Day, we asked Town Concillors, Clergy from Emmanuel Church and the Headteacher from Billericay School to take that step with us and, at the same time, our organisation took their own step into the unknown by planning an event that occurs simultaneously across the British Isles.
Over 950 clubs throughout the islands were asked to coordinate the largest blindfolded walk on record, with club members, civic leaders and local dignitaries all setting off on a 300 metre walk at the same time.
With over 1.3 million members in 46,000 clubs in 205 countries, Lions Club International has a long, proud, history of supporting the blind and visually impaired and made a strong commitment to community service and serving youth throughout the world. In 1925 Helen Keller challenged Lions to be "Knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness" and, in 1931, Lions Clubs International began a program promoting the use of white canes for people who are blind.
